COVID 19 RESPONSE

Responding quickly to protect vulnerable communities.

To prevent the spread of COVID19, we responded immediately, teaching tailors and trainees to create masks, making sure the right messages got through, and prioritising high risk communities for donations.

The problem

Just like much of world, this year Malawi had to contend with the coronavirus, and the consequences of the pandemic are serious. Malawi responded with a lockdown in April 2020. With families living in close proximity, limited access to running water, unclear information and limited provision of healthcare services, the difficulty of controlling COVID19 and the consequences for communities are significant. Families have had to face difficult choices between safety and having enough to survive, with additional challenges affecting girls who were off schools for months, and other vulnerable groups like the elderly .

our SOLUTION

Our initial response was to reorganise our facilities to safely produce masks to distribute to our local partners, alongside COVID19 prevention awareness. As the situation evolved and schools, including the Fashion Lab closed, we distributed resources so that the women were able to continue making masks from their own homes while earning an income. Later when it was safe to do so, we brought back our teams in a restructured and socially distanced environment. We are focusing our donation efforts on the most vulnerable, including the elderly, street children, those living in refugee camps and the surrounding communities. We have also created tutorials in several languages so you can make your own masks, or share with your community, as well as flashcards that can be easily downloaded and shared via WhatsApp, Facebook and other commonly used networks.

Please see our Resources section below to access and download our resources.

If you would like us to help providing PPE to your community in Malawi or elsewhere, or you are interested in helping us translate any of our resources into a different language so you can share further, we would love to hear from you.
